Dis Compositions emerged as a deconstruction of painting—an attempt to unmake and reimagine its grammar through the lens of Anglo-Caribbean vernacular. The title itself echoes a shift in pronunciation, a linguistic gesture that becomes a conceptual one: “dis” as both refusal and reconfiguration. In these works, heirloom fabrics, cut and collaged, take the place of canvas; gestures of sewing, layering, and mending replace brushwork. The surface becomes a field of translation, where inherited materials speak back to the inherited language of Western painting. Each composition holds within it a process of creolization—of breaking apart and remaking, of carrying what endures while transforming what was imposed. Through this approach, Dis Compositions seeks to expand what painting can hold: not only pigment and image, but memory, vernacular, and the embodied rhythm of speech made visible in cloth.
